Healing with Essential Oils

Essential oils not only smell good but also have several properties that make them wonderful additions to your day-to-day living. Their properties are associated with certain chakras in your body and working with them regularly can effect change in your mental, emotional and physical health.

Here are some of my favourite essential oils and their properties:

This herb alleviates anxiety, helps you sleep and is anti-inflammatory (try using it the next time you have an insect bite).

It is associated with the third eye chakra, which is the energy center for deep insight. Use it to help with concentration, creative visualization and meditation.

This herb has anti-bacterial properties and can alleviate stress.

Eucalyptus works predominantly with the heart chakra, which is the energy center that is associated with cardiac and respiratory function. As a result, it is helpful to use when you are sick with a cold and cough. Heat a pot of water until it steams and add some drops of eucalyptus oil. Throw a towel over your head and inhale. It will ease congestion.

The scent of this oil is best described as lavender with a citrus twist. It corresponds with the crown chakra, the energy center that is associated with your connection to the divine, universe, or whatever it is that you believe in. For this reason, it is good to use during meditation. It can also give your skin a healthy glow when added to a carrier oil such as coconut, jojoba, or olive.

This essential oil is simultaneously relaxing and energizing. It can be particularly helpful while working as it can keep you productive, yet calm. It is associated with the solar plexus chakra, which is the center of power, control, self-esteem and confidence. This is also the chakra that is associated with your stomach. As a result, the scent of this oil can ease digestive discomfort, especially when combined with peppermint.

How to Use Essential Oils
You can apply the oil to your skin, under your ear lobes, or directly over a chakra.

You can also use an oil burner in which you add a few drops of the oil to some water and burn a tea light candle underneath. The heat from the candle will release the scent into the air.

If you are a sea salt or bubble bath type of person, try adding a few drops of an essential oil to your next bath.

Another way to use essential oils is to convert them into room sprays. Buy a small glass spray bottle and add some water with a few drops of one or a few of your favourite essential oils. Shake it up and spray! You can adjust the strength of the scent according to your preference. This is a great way to keep a nice scent in your house without using a spray laden with chemicals.

Where to Find Essential Oils
Most natural health stores keep essential oils. You can also find them online but I suggest that you do your research and get those that are of high quality. Some companies add chemicals, which lowers the energetic vibration of the oil and weakens its natural properties. The company I like is called “The Aromatherapist”, which is available at some Whole Foods locations. “Colour Energy Aromatherapy” is also a great brand that has created essential oil blends for specific chakras.

Enjoy your essential oils!
