Healing with Crystals
Healing with Crystals.jpg

We are all familiar with the stereotypical new age image of girls and guys walking around with crystals hanging from their necks and wrists. Is this just a fashion statement or is there an actual benefit in wearing crystals?

The Ancient Egyptians believed that crystals possessed a magical power to balance energy fields and connect people with a divine force. They incorporated crystals in jewelry, art pieces and furniture. Turquoise was one of their favourites, as it was believed to be a stone of protection.

Regardless of what ancient civilizations might have believed about crystals, our modern day inventions have proved that they are powerful conductors of energy.

The Scientific Basis for Crystals
Crystals are able to transform a mechanical force into electricity and vice versa. As a result, quartz crystals are used to control electric circuits in watches and radio transmitters. They are also used in ultrasound machines, as they are able to convert electric signals into sound waves.

Crystals for Chakra Therapy
Chakras are energy centers, which vibrate at particular frequencies that are associated with colours. For example, the root chakra (located at the base of the spine) vibrates at approximately 1000-1200 Hz, which is the same frequency as the colour red. Therefore, the colour of the root chakra is red.

Given that crystals are conductors of energy, it is believed that those, which correspond to a particular chakra colour, can aid that chakra (in the case it is weak or deficient) to vibrate closer to its optimal frequency. As chakras regulate our mental, emotional and physical well-being, crystals are tools that can be used in combination with other therapies and practices to restore us to a state of balance.

Here are crystals that are associated with the seven major chakras and some of their properties:

Garnet – root chakra – red – grounds and helps you feel secure – helpful for your blood, spine, lower back, bones and adrenal glands

Carnelian – sacral chakra – orange – aids with creativity and sexuality – helpful for your lower abdomen and reproductive organs

Citrine – solar plexus chakra – yellow – aids with self-esteem and confidence – helpful for the digestive system, liver and spleen

Rose Quartz – heart chakra – pink – aids with love – helpful for the heart, shoulder/upper back, and respiratory, circulatory and immune systems

Turquoise – throat chakra – blue – aids with expressing yourself – helpful for anything involving the throat, thyroid gland, mouth or ears

Amethyst – third eye chakra – violet – aids with insight, perspective and visualization – helpful for anything involving the eyes, neurological disturbances, headaches, or sinus conditions

Quartz – crown chakra – white – aids with trusting the process of life and with ideas – helpful for anxiety, depression, neurological disturbances, mental illness, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease

How to Use Crystals
Crystals must be kept close to your body in order for them to have an energetic effect on you. You can keep a stone in your pocket or you can purchase a necklace, bracelet or ring with the stone so you can wear it comfortably as a piece of jewelry.

Remember that the left side of your body receives energy while the right side of your body gives energy. Therefore, if you want to receive energy, such as energy for health, wear a crystal with that property on the left side of your body. Conversely, if you want to manifest something in your life, such as confidence, wear a crystal with that property on the right side of your body.

You can also keep the stones under your pillow while you sleep at night or hold them in your hands while you meditate.

How to Clear Crystals
Crystals need to be cleared every so often to ensure that their energetic effects remain potent. The best way to clear them is to either soak them in salt water for 5 minutes or pass them through the smoke of burning sage. If you are keeping the crystal on you all the time, it is a good idea to clear it regularly, such as every 2-3 days.

Healing with Essential Oils

Essential oils not only smell good but also have several properties that make them wonderful additions to your day-to-day living. Their properties are associated with certain chakras in your body and working with them regularly can effect change in your mental, emotional and physical health.

Here are some of my favourite essential oils and their properties:

Lavender
This herb alleviates anxiety, helps you sleep and is anti-inflammatory (try using it the next time you have an insect bite).

It is associated with the third eye chakra, which is the energy center for deep insight. Use it to help with concentration, creative visualization and meditation.

Eucalyptus
This herb has anti-bacterial properties and can alleviate stress.

Eucalyptus works predominantly with the heart chakra, which is the energy center that is associated with cardiac and respiratory function. As a result, it is helpful to use when you are sick with a cold and cough. Heat a pot of water until it steams and add some drops of eucalyptus oil. Throw a towel over your head and inhale. It will ease congestion.

Frankincense
The scent of this oil is best described as lavender with a citrus twist. It corresponds with the crown chakra, the energy center that is associated with your connection to the divine, universe, or whatever it is that you believe in. For this reason, it is good to use during meditation. It can also give your skin a healthy glow when added to a carrier oil such as coconut, jojoba, or olive.

Geranium
This essential oil is simultaneously relaxing and energizing. It can be particularly helpful while working as it can keep you productive, yet calm. It is associated with the solar plexus chakra, which is the center of power, control, self-esteem and confidence. This is also the chakra that is associated with your stomach. As a result, the scent of this oil can ease digestive discomfort, especially when combined with peppermint.

How to Use Essential Oils
You can apply the oil to your skin, under your ear lobes, or directly over a chakra.

You can also use an oil burner in which you add a few drops of the oil to some water and burn a tea light candle underneath. The heat from the candle will release the scent into the air.

If you are a sea salt or bubble bath type of person, try adding a few drops of an essential oil to your next bath.

Another way to use essential oils is to convert them into room sprays. Buy a small glass spray bottle and add some water with a few drops of one or a few of your favourite essential oils. Shake it up and spray! You can adjust the strength of the scent according to your preference. This is a great way to keep a nice scent in your house without using a spray laden with chemicals.

Where to Find Essential Oils
Most natural health stores keep essential oils. You can also find them online but I suggest that you do your research and get those that are of high quality. Some companies add chemicals, which lowers the energetic vibration of the oil and weakens its natural properties. The company I like is called “The Aromatherapist”, which is available at some Whole Foods locations. “Colour Energy Aromatherapy” is also a great brand that has created essential oil blends for specific chakras.

Enjoy your essential oils!

Tips & Tools to Keep Your Home Buzzing at a High Energetic Vibration

Just as people have their own energy, so does the energy of a home. All the good and bad events that happen there carry their own distinct energy that can stay long after an event has ended. In addition, anytime people come into your home, they bring along different energies that can stay long after they are gone.

A lot of this may seem like hogwash but think about it – have you ever walked into a room and known that an argument had just taken place there? How about attending the home of a person whose family member has just passed away? It’s likely that you would have sensed some pretty heavy energy in the air.

So what can be done? A lot! Here are some of the ways you can clear the energy of your home:

Get An Energetic Home Clearing
Just as an energy healer can work on a person, they can work on a house to clear away negative energy.

Keep Your Home Clutter Free
Sometimes life gets in the way and things can really accumulate but find a way to make it a regular practice to throw away things you don’t need and keep your home as clutter-free as possible. Remember that the sweater you wore years ago does not need to be in your closet anymore and can always help someone else!

Use a Himalayan Salt Lamp
You’ve probably seen these around in health food stores. What is the big deal with them? Well, we are around electronics all the time – whether it is our computer, the microwave, florescent lighting, heaters, or air conditioners. They emit positive ions, which lower our energy and make us feel tired. A Himalayan Salt Lamp releases negative ions, which neutralizes the effect of positive ions in our environment and improves the air quality. They also have a visually soothing effect.

Burn Sage
This is a practice that is regularly practiced by First Nations. They burn sage to cleanse their energy fields and also use it on places to remove negative energy. If you don’t like the smell or smoke, try using a sage spray, which has some sage mixed in with other essential oils. The one I often use between energy treatments is called “Smudge In Spray” created by Margaret Ann Lembo. It smells divine!

Get Some Fresh Air
Leave the windows open every once in a while to let out stale air and welcome fresh air in. Make sure you have a good screen to prevent any creepy crawlies from coming inside. Fresh air isn’t as lovely when a spider comes along with it!

Keep Green Plants
It has been scientifically proven that certain plants can improve the quality of indoor air. My favourite is aloe vera (I can probably write an entire blog entry on this one plant alone). It can be used to clear away by-products of chemical based cleaners. It’s a very good kitchen plant.

Use Essential Oils
There are some great essential oils that can be burned or converted into a room spray, which can clear away negativity from your home. For example, Eucalyptus is antibacterial and is great to get rid of germs in the air.

All of the techniques above will change the energy of your home for the better!
